Toyota is the safest bet in used-car export. In every one of our main markets — UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Nigeria and Costa Rica — Toyota holds the strongest resale value, the deepest parts network and the most active dealer demand. If you are picking your first container from China, or scaling an existing import business, start with Toyota.
This guide breaks down the four models that actually move: Land Cruiser (the Gulf king), Hilux (the workhorse), Camry (the volume sedan) and Corolla (the budget entry). For each you get the sweet-spot years, the 2026 price range in China, the markets where it sells best, and the checks that separate a clean car from a money pit.
Note on Ethiopia: the country’s ICE-import ban (2024– ) means petrol Toyotas currently have no market there — our EV guide covers what does sell. For every other market below, Toyota petrol models are in demand.
I. Why Toyota Dominates Export
Four structural reasons, not hype:
- Resale value — a Land Cruiser or Camry holds value better than any equivalent in every market we ship to. Buyers assume they can re-sell.
- Parts and service — from Lagos to Baghdad to Dubai, Toyota parts are on the shelf. Cheap and available means higher buyer confidence.
- Dealer liquidity — volume dealers actively bid for clean Toyotas; you are not stuck with inventory.
- Age-rule compatibility — the age windows of our main markets (UAE ≤10 yrs, Nigeria ≤12 yrs, Saudi ≤5 yrs, Costa Rica 6 yrs) all have Toyota sweet spots you can actually source.
II. The Four Models at a Glance
| Model | Best For | Sweet-Spot Years (2026) | China Price (used, 2026) | Top Markets |

| Hilux | Commercial/pickup workhorses | 2019–2023 | $20,000–$32,000 | Iraq, Nigeria, Costa Rica, UAE |
| Camry | Dependable volume sedan | 2019–2023 | $12,000–$18,000 | Nigeria, Costa Rica, UAE, Saudi |
| Corolla | Budget volume sedan | 2019–2022 | $9,000–$14,000 | Iraq, Nigeria, UAE |
Prices shown are indicative ranges (checked 2026-08). Actual quotes depend on current availability and are provided on inquiry.
III. Land Cruiser — The Gulf King
Why it sells: In the UAE and across the Gulf, the Land Cruiser is the benchmark vehicle. Dealers buy clean units at port in Dubai for local sale and re-export across Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa. One good LC200 can carry the margin of five sedans.
Sweet spot: LC200 (200-series) petrol, 2016–2020. This generation is proven, parts are everywhere, and it clears the UAE 10-year rule comfortably. In China, the 4.0L V6 (1GR) is the volume unit; the 4.6L V8 (1UR) and 5.7L V8 (3UR) command premiums.
2026 China price: roughly $38,000–$65,000 depending on year, mileage and spec. Expect to pay more for GCC-configured examples, low mileage and full service history.
Where it moves: UAE (local + re-export), Saudi (only 2021+ cars qualify under the 5-year rule — that means LC300/newer), Iraq (usually routed via Dubai).
Buying checks:
- Frame and underbody — the #1 killer. LC200s are used hard off-road; check for rust, bent chassis rails and welding.
- Engine smoke test — start cold, watch for blue (oil) or white (coolant) smoke on the 1GR.
- Transmission — the 6-speed (A750F) should shift clean through all gears with no flare.
- Mileage vs. wear — a 2018 LC200 with 40,000 km and a worn steering wheel is lying. Cross-check odometer against service stamps and interior wear.
- History report — verify against accident/flood records; salvage-title cars are rejected at UAE customs.
IV. Hilux — The Workhorse
Why it sells: The Hilux is the pickup every construction site, farm and security contractor in our markets wants. In Iraq it is bought for reconstruction work; in Nigeria for commercial use; in Costa Rica for mountainous terrain.
Sweet spot: 2019–2023, diesel or petrol. The 2.4L and 2.8L diesel (GD engines) are the most wanted in Iraq and Nigeria for fuel economy; petrol units suit Gulf buyers.
2026 China price: roughly $20,000–$32,000. China’s Hilux supply is limited (sold through import channels), so act fast when a clean unit appears — and verify your source.
Where it moves: Iraq (construction/security), Nigeria (commercial volume), Costa Rica (farms, hills), UAE & Saudi (work fleets).
Buying checks:
- Chassis and load bed — these are work vehicles; check for dents, rust and overloaded-spring damage.
- 4WD system — engage low range and hubs; a broken transfer case is a costly surprise.
- Diesel DPF/EGR condition — for diesel units, a clogged DPF causes limp mode. If you cannot verify, budget a service.
- Service history — fleet vehicles often have patchy records; lean toward one-owner cars.
V. Camry — The Volume Sedan
Why it sells: The Camry is the most dependable sedan in export, with the strongest resale in its class. Nigeria’s volume dealers move them steadily; Costa Rica buyers favor the hybrid versions; the UAE local market takes the petrol V6 and 2.5L.
Sweet spot: 2019–2023. The XV70 generation (2018+) is the one buyers recognize. Hybrid (2.5L) units are prized in Costa Rica because of lower import tax on hybrids and high fuel prices.
2026 China price: roughly $12,000–$18,000 — consistent with a typical $13,000 landed-cost example for a 2020 Camry we published in our UAE cost guide.
Where it moves: Nigeria (volume), Costa Rica (hybrids especially), UAE (local + fleet), Saudi (2021+).
Buying checks:
- Hybrid battery health — for hybrid units, get a battery state-of-health report before committing. A dead traction battery kills your margin.
- Accident history — Camrys are common fleet/family cars; verify no structural repairs.
- Odometer integrity — cross-check mileage with wear and records.
- Engine — 2.5L and 3.5L (2GR) units are reliable; just check for oil leaks and clean running.

VI. Corolla — The Budget Entry
Why it sells: Wherever buyers are price-sensitive, the Corolla is the default. In Iraq and Nigeria it is the highest-volume Toyota import — cheap, cheap to run, cheap to fix, and easy to sell on.
Sweet spot: 2019–2022. The 2019+ Corolla (sedan) and older E210 generation both clear the age rules for Iraq (5–10 yrs, confirm current) and Nigeria (≤12 yrs).
2026 China price: roughly $9,000–$14,000 — the entry point of the Toyota range, which is why it moves in volume.
Where it moves: Iraq (cheap volume), Nigeria (volume), UAE (local economy segment).
Buying checks:
- Rust — check the sills, wheel arches and underbody; budget cars often have neglected corrosion.
- Maintenance records — a Corolla with full history sells instantly; one without lingers.
- Tyres and brakes — minor wear is fine, but factor replacement costs into your margin.
VII. Which Toyota for Which Market
| Market | Best Toyota to Ship | Why |
|---|---|---|
| UAE | Land Cruiser, Camry, Corolla, Hilux | Strongest all-round Toyota demand; LC for margin, sedans for volume. |
| Saudi Arabia | Land Cruiser (2021+), Camry (2021+) | 5-year rule forces newer cars — higher source price, higher sell price. |
| Iraq | Corolla, Hilux | Price-sensitive volume; Corolla for sedans, Hilux for reconstruction work. |
| Nigeria | Camry, Corolla, Hilux | 12-year age window is the widest; volume business on reliable sedans and pickups. |
| Costa Rica | Hybrid Camry, Hilux, Corolla | Tax favors hybrids; terrain favors pickups. Ship only 6-years-new. |
| Ethiopia | — (EV only) | Petrol Toyota not applicable under the ICE ban. |
VIII. Toyota-Specific Checks Before You Commit
Beyond the model checks above, five rules apply to every Toyota you source in China:
- Verify the VIN — confirm it matches the registration, the engine number and the spec sheet. A mismatched VIN will stop customs clearance in any market.
- Odometer + wear audit — Toyota is the most-wound-back car brand in used exports. Cross-check mileage with service stamps, tyres, pedal wear and interior condition.
- Accident and flood history — get a report. Salvage, flood or structural damage = rejected at UAE/Saudi customs and a near-total loss on re-sale.
- GCC-spec preparation — for Gulf destinations, factor in small conformity items (headlight alignment, rear fog lights, GCC-spec catalytic converter) if the car isn’t already GCC-configured. Usually $100–$300.
- Hybrid battery report — for Camry/Corolla hybrids headed to Costa Rica, the battery SOH report is your negotiating and pricing tool.
IX. Import Cost Reality (in Brief)
Toyota’s landed cost follows the same math as any import: China price + China-side costs + freight + insurance + destination duty/VAT + clearance + registration. As a rule of thumb, budget 12–20% above the China purchase price for non-tax costs, plus each country’s import tax.
