Toyota Corolla: Used Export Guide — Specs, Model Years, Markets, Price Bands
Model Overview
The Corolla needs no introduction in any port city on earth. Toyota has built more than 50 million units of the nameplate since 1966, and in the used-export trade it behaves like a currency: everyone knows what it is, everyone can service it, and nobody argues about resale. For the wider Toyota line — Camry, Land Cruiser and Hilux — see our best used Toyotas to import from China.
For buyers sourcing from China, two generations matter:
- E170 (2013–2019, China launch 19 June 2014, FAW Toyota). Sold as 卡罗拉 (Corolla) with a 1.6L 1ZR-FE or 1.8L 2ZR-FE petrol engine and a China-developed 8-speed S-CVT. Body 4620 × 1775 × 1465 mm, wheelbase 2700 mm; the later 1.2T 9NR-FTS version (85 kW) stretched to 4635 mm.
- E210 (2019–present). TNGA platform, sold in China as sedan and with the 1.8L hybrid. Global spec sheets put the sedan around 4630–4635 mm long, 1780 mm wide, wheelbase 2700 mm.
The hybrid is the one to understand. It uses the 1.8L 2ZR-FXE Atkinson-cycle engine with Toyota’s THS-II system. Pre-facelift cars (2019–2022, most markets) rate about 122 PS combined; the 2022 facelift raised system output to roughly 140 PS in European and Japanese specification. US-market 2022 cars kept the older 121 hp tune, so the badge doesn’t tell you the output — the market does.
China also ran the E170 hybrid, the 卡罗拉双擎, launched 29 October 2015 from RMB 139,800 with a claimed 4.2 L/100 km and an 8-year / 200,000 km hybrid battery warranty from new. Most of those cars are now 9–10 years old, which puts the battery warranty story at its tail end. That matters when you pitch a 双擎 to a fleet buyer; say so before he asks.
Who buys Corollas at export volume? Fleet operators in the Gulf, ride-hailing and airport-taxi companies across Africa, driving schools in Central Asia (see our Uzbekistan import guide), and small dealers filling mixed containers in Latin America and the CIS. Nobody buys a Corolla to impress anyone. They buy it because the next owner already knows the car.
Year-by-Year: What Changed
E170 (China, 2014–2019)
- 2014: Launch with 1.6L 1ZR-FE and 1.8L 2ZR-FE, 8-speed S-CVT. 12 variants at launch, RMB 107,800–159,800.
- 2015: 卡罗拉双擎 hybrid added (October). 8-year/200k km battery warranty, 4.2 L/100 km claimed.
- 2017: 1.2T 9NR-FTS (85 kW) joined the range; length went to 4635 mm. This became the volume petrol engine in later E170s.
- Recommendation: for hot markets, the 1.8L 2ZR-FE is the safest listing in the whole Corolla catalogue. Simple port injection, chain drive, parts in every souk and every roadside stall from Lagos to Almaty. The 1.2T is fine but turbochargers add a conversation you don’t want with a first-time buyer.
E210 (2019–present)
- 2019: China launch (August, FAW Toyota). 1.2T and 1.8 双擎 hybrid at first.
- 2022: Global facelift. Hybrid system output rose from about 122 PS to about 140 PS in most markets through a new Power Control Unit; the engine stayed the 2ZR-FXE.
- Recommendation: if your buyer wants the hybrid, take the 2022+ facelift when budget allows. Same engine, meaningfully stronger system, better infotainment. Pre-facelift hybrids still make sense for price-sensitive fleets, but you must present them as the older tune.
Best Export Markets
Middle East. Corolla is a Gulf fixture; Saudi and UAE fleets run them to six-figure odometers. Take petrol 1.8 sedans in light colors with fabric seats. Hybrids sell too, but desert fleet buyers ask first about air conditioning at idle, and a petrol engine drives a mechanical compressor that never quits as long as the engine runs. Duty, age limits and GCC conformity paperwork: confirm with your local customs broker — regulations change. Our country guides cover the specifics for Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Africa. Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania. The E170 1.8 is the volume pick; spare parts are everywhere and any mechanic can time it with hand tools. Watch the receiving side’s age rules: several West African markets cap import age at 8–10 years with sliding duties. Confirm with your local customs broker — regulations change. See our Africa market guide and the Nigeria import guide for the age windows and duty tiers.
Russia / CIS. Chinese-market Corollas are LHD, which fits directly. Petrol sells better than hybrid in far-cold regions because buyers there judge winter cranking, and a 12V battery that sits a month at -30°C is a different animal than the HV system. The Russian recycling fee (утилизационный сбор) structure changed repeatedly through 2024–2025. Confirm with your local customs broker — regulations change.
Southeast Asia. Only LHD markets apply: Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos. China is LHD, so right-hand-drive markets (Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia) need JDM sourcing, not China stock. State this up front; it kills half the wrong inquiries.
Latin America. LHD fits. The Corolla competes with local assembled units in Mexico and Brazil, so the export case is price on specific year-mileage combinations. Shipping time from Chinese ports to the west coast of South America runs weeks, not days, so quote FOB with realistic vessel schedules.
One line about hybrid batteries and heat: Toyota’s THS battery lives in the cabin (behind the rear seat), not in the engine bay, so desert heat is less punishing than buyers assume. The chemistry is NiMH or Li-ion depending on year and market — read the label, don’t guess. We explain the battery paperwork side in our EV and hybrid battery guide.
Common Problems & What to Check
The Corolla’s failure list is short, which is exactly why margin hides in the inspection details.
- E170 1.2T (9NR-FTS): oil dilution. Short-trip cold driving in northern China produced fuel-in-oil complaints and oil level rise. Check the dipstick level and smell on a cold engine before you buy. The 1.6/1.8 NA engines don’t share this pattern to the same degree.
- Hybrid 12V battery. THS cars use a small auxiliary battery; a Corolla hybrid that sat for months won’t crank the ready-on sequence even though the HV pack is fine. Jump-start per the manual’s front-battery point, then test. Ship with the 12V charged or disconnected.
- Hybrid AC compressor is electric. No engine idle = no compressor input at a standstill until the car is in READY. A buyer test-sitting in a hot yard with a dead 12V will think the AC is broken. Explain before he does.
- Water damage after typhoon season. Chinese coastal stock (Guangzhou, Ningbo, Xiamen) sees flood cars every summer. Lift the carpets, check the seat rail bolts and the ECU box under the dash for silt lines. Corolla ECUs sit low.
- S-CVT judder on high-mileage E170s is rare but reported; a test drive from cold is worth the 15 minutes.
- Rust is a non-issue for southern-China cars; northern stock (Beijing, Dongbei) stored outdoors can show rear subframe surface rust by year 8–10. Photograph it for the buyer.
Grade discipline: we recommend Grade 4.0 or better for export listings — no visible panel repaint without disclosure, interior wear commensurate with mileage, all electrics working. A 3.5-grade car with a claimed “small accident” is not a bargain at export; it is a discount you will pay for twice. Our car selection guide covers how to frame grade and mileage for your buyers.
Export Documentation Notes
Petrol Corollas move under China’s standard used-car export set: used-car export license, commercial invoice, contract, packing list, vehicle registration deregistration documents, and pre-shipment inspection where the destination requires it. We quote EXW or FOB (Chinese main ports), your freight forwarder handles destination charges and clearance.
Hybrid Corollas add battery paperwork. Carriers ask for an MSDS for the traction battery and, where the pack is lithium chemistry, a UN38.3 test summary. Confirm the chemistry on the battery label before booking vessel space — NiMH and Li-ion pack different declarations. We also charge or disconnect the 12V battery before loading; a flat 12V is the most common “car won’t start at destination” claim in this trade.
One policy anchor worth repeating to buyers: under China’s used-car export policy (updated November 2025, effective 1 January 2026), vehicles first registered more than 180 days ago ship as used cars through the standard path. Younger units need the OEM’s after-sales service confirmation or the international-version channel. E210 2025-stock hybrids can brush against this line; check the first-registration date on the certificate before you promise a delivery window. Full detail in our 2026 China car export policy guide.

FAQ
1. Which Corolla year is the safest resale in Africa? E170 1.8L petrol, 2016–2018, no accidents, sub-100,000 km. It clears most age windows, the parts network is mature, and buyers recognize the shape instantly.
2. Is the hybrid worth the premium for a taxi fleet? Run the fuel math against local petrol prices. In Gulf and Southeast Asian fuel markets the hybrid usually pays back its premium inside 2–3 years of taxi duty; in countries with subsidized petrol, the petrol 1.8 wins on simplicity. Both are defensible; neither is universal.
3. Do China-spec Corollas differ from Gulf-spec? Yes in equipment (China cars carry more driver-assistance features), but mechanically the 1.8 and the hybrid are the same global powertrains. Buyers in the Gulf accept them routinely.
4. What battery documents do I need for the hybrid? MSDS for the traction battery, and a UN38.3 test summary if the pack is lithium. Plus a charged or disconnected 12V battery at loading. We prepare these before the vessel cut-off. More background in our EV and hybrid battery guide.
5. Can you supply right-hand-drive Corollas? Not from China. Chinese Corollas are LHD. For RHD markets we’ll tell you plainly and you source from Japan; we would rather lose that sale than ship a car you cannot register.
6. How do you grade condition? Auction-style grading with photo and video inspection before purchase. Grade 4.0+ is our export listing standard. You see the actual unit before money moves.
7. What trade terms do you quote? EXW and FOB from Chinese main ports. Destination duties, port charges and clearance are between you and your own forwarder — regulations change, so confirm locally. The difference between the two terms is set out in our EXW vs FOB guide.
8. Is a 2025-registered E210 hybrid exportable? If first registration is under 180 days, the standard used-car path doesn’t apply; it needs the OEM after-sales confirmation or international-version channel. We check the registration date before quoting, every time.
