Car Export Payment Methods: How to Pay a Chinese Exporter Safely in 2026

Car Export Payment Methods: How to Pay a Chinese Exporter Safely in 2026

The most expensive question in this business is not “which car” — it is “who do I send the money to, and what protects me.” Every year, importers lose deposits to fake sellers, and every year, legitimate exporters lose deals because buyers cannot trust the payment path. This guide covers the three payment methods that actually work for vehicle exports from China in 2026, and when to use each.

T/T (Telegraphic Transfer): The Workhorse

How it works (industry standard):

  1. Buyer pays 30% deposit to reserve the vehicle(s)
  2. Exporter sources, inspects, and prepares export documentation
  3. Buyer receives photos, video and documents; pays the 70% balance before shipment
  4. Exporter ships; buyer receives the bill of lading

Strengths: simple, fast, low banking fees, and the 30/70 structure keeps both sides honest — the exporter has working capital, the buyer keeps the bulk of the money until the car is ready.

Risks and how to kill them:

  • Deposit fraud is real — especially with unknown sellers in Nigeria and Iraq marketplaces. Before the deposit, demand: exporter’s business license, export license number, and a live video call showing the actual vehicle (with the VIN visible) and the seller’s yard. See our verification checklist in the FAQ.
  • Use third-party inspection (SGS or similar) on high-value orders — $200–300 protects a $30,000 wire.
  • Never pay to personal accounts in the name of individuals claiming to represent a company. Company bank accounts only.

L/C (Letter of Credit): For First Deals and Big Orders

How it works:

  1. Buyer’s bank issues the L/C with shipment terms
  2. Exporter ships per the terms
  3. Bank pays upon presentation of compliant documents (bill of lading, invoice, packing list, export license)

When to use it: first transactions with a new supplier, orders above $50,000, and any deal where the buyer wants bank-grade protection.

What it costs: bank fees typically 1–3% of the transaction value, plus the document work. Documents must be presented with zero discrepancies — a single typo between the invoice and the bill of lading can stall payment for weeks.

The honest caveat: in the used car trade, L/Cs are less common than T/T because condition disputes do not fit neatly into “document compliance.” If the car arrives with a fault, the bank has already paid against the documents. L/C protects you from a seller who never ships; it does not protect you from a seller who ships a bad car. That protection comes from inspection before payment — which is why we combine L/C terms with pre-shipment video inspection on every order.

PayPal (and Small Deposits)

For deposits under $10,000, PayPal is a practical bridge: fast, familiar, and with buyer protection in many cases. It is not a settlement rail for full vehicle payments — fees and limits make it impractical — but as a first-trust mechanism for small orders it works well.

The Payment-Risk Map by Market

Market Main Risk Recommended Setup
Nigeria Advance-fee fraud, fake sellers, currency pressure T/T 30/70 with verified company account + pre-deposit video call; L/C for first order — see our Nigeria import guide
Iraq Informal banking, sanctions-adjacent banks Confirm the buyer’s bank can remit to China before quoting; T/T preferred
UAE / Saudi Low fraud but large orders T/T standard; L/C for first $50k+ deals
Ethiopia Forex shortages delay payment Confirm LC approval timeline first; patience required — see our Ethiopia guide
Costa Rica Banking is formal and reliable T/T standard

Red Flags That Cost People Money

  • Seller pushes for 100% upfront on a first order
  • Price is 30%+ below market “because the seller needs cash fast”
  • The vehicle photos are stock images (run a reverse image search)
  • The “exporter” asks for payment to a personal account or a different company name
  • No live video call possible “because of time difference” — time zones have never stopped a legitimate exporter from showing their yard
