The fastest way to lose money in vehicle importing is not a bad deal — it is a good deal on the wrong car for the wrong country. A 2014 Land Cruiser that sells in a week in Dubai cannot legally enter Saudi Arabia at all. A petrol sedan that moves in Lagos is unsellable in Addis Ababa, where petrol imports are banned entirely. This guide gives you the 2026 rules for the markets we serve and the models that fit them.
Step 1: The Five Questions Every Order Must Answer
- What is the age limit? Every market has one, and it changes. The car must clear the limit in the year it lands, not the year you buy it.
- Left or right-hand drive? Most of our markets are LHD; Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania and South Africa are RHD — different sourcing entirely.
- What does the tax ladder reward? Some markets tax engine size, some tax age, some tax value. The car that wins is the one the tax system likes.
- What is the infrastructure reality? Charging networks, fuel quality, road conditions and service networks decide whether an EV, hybrid or diesel is right.
- Who actually buys it? Dealer, fleet, end consumer — each has a different sweet spot.
Step 2: Market-by-Market Playbook (2026 Rules)
UAE — The Premium Used Hub
- Age rule: 10 years (2016+ in 2026). Duty: 5% + 5% VAT on CIF.
- What sells: Land Cruiser, Patrol, Lexus LX/GX, Hilux, plus Tesla and premium EVs for the tech segment. Big engines are a selling point.
- Play: the UAE is the “legendary older car” market — 2016–2020 icons still enter legally. Source clean, well-maintained units; condition beats price here. Full process in our UAE import guide.
Saudi Arabia — Newer, Bigger, Premium
- Age rule: 5 years (2021+ in 2026). Duty: 5% + 15% VAT on depreciated value.
- What sells: 2021+ Land Cruiser LC300, Patrol, Raptor, Lexus, and premium EVs.
- Play: the 5-year wall forces newer, higher-spec sourcing. Higher cost in, higher price out — this is a margin market, not a volume market. Details in our Saudi import guide.
Nigeria — Volume and Value
- Age rule: 12 years (2014+ in 2026). Duty: combined rate cut 70%→40% in July 2026, plus a new 2–4% green tax on petrol engines above 2.0L — EVs and small engines exempt.
- What sells: Corolla, Camry, RAV4, and Chinese economy cars (BYD F3, Geely Emgrand, Changan Eado) in the $5,000–$15,000 band.
- Play: the duty cut lowers landed cost — but the market is price-driven and fraud-prone. Vet buyers hard; stick to T/T 30/70. See our Nigeria import guide.
Iraq — The Near-New Niche
- Age rule: 2 years — the strictest of our markets. Duty: 8–15%, and vehicles of Chinese origin may qualify for 0%.
- What sells: nearly new SUVs and sedans; Chinese brands get a tariff edge.
- Play: source near-new units only. This is the market where the 180-day manufacturer certificate rule matters most — paperwork decides whether the car can even ship. See our Iraq import guide.
Ethiopia — EV Only
- Age rule: petrol and diesel vehicles are banned from import; the market is EV-only. Duty: 15% CBU.
- What sells: affordable EVs — BYD Seagull/Atto 3 class, plus commercial EVs. Chinese brands dominate.
- Play: the price band decides. Source the cheapest reliable EVs; payment patience is required (forex shortages). See our Ethiopia EV import guide.
Costa Rica — The Tax Ladder Market
- Age rule: none formally, but the tax ladder climbs with age (0–3 years: 52–67% → 11+ years: 80–100%+). Practical sweet spot: under 6 years old.
- What sells: hybrids and EVs (lower excise), compact SUVs, Toyota/Honda reliability plays.
- Play: the tax base is the higher of CIF or the government’s Autovalor reference — know the reference value before quoting. See our Costa Rica import guide.
Step 3: The Universal Rules
- Toyota is the default answer across every market we serve — the parts network does the selling for you.
- Match fuel type to fuel price. Cheap-fuel markets (Saudi) want big petrol engines; diesel rules where fuel economy matters.
- EVs go where policy invites them — Ethiopia bans petrol, Costa Rica under-taxes EVs, Nigeria now exempts EV duty. Policy, not preference, creates EV markets.
- Start with a 2–3 unit trial order, validate clearance and resale, then scale. A slow start beats a container of mistakes.
- Check the registration date, not just the model year — the 180-day export rule and age limits both key off registration.
